Overview:

Introduction

To reduce environmental impacts of greenhouse gas emissions, and to aid sustainable development, there is a need to support low carbon technologies, especially from renewable sources. The ocean is a vast and largely untapped energy resource, which can potentially supply the global electric-ity demand. Therefore, an emerging eld of marine renewable energy industry has initiated, and such expertise is increasingly on demand. Recently, a coordinated strategy for developing inter- Disciplinary ocean renewable energy program at URI has been formed to promote research and Education in this area (Ocean Renewable Energy Cluster). This course can serve as a stepping stone for graduate/undergraduate students from various disciplines, who are interested in technical and environmental aspects of ocean renewable energy. It applies knowledge they have learned across multiple courses in an exciting new area.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course would review the renewable sources and their need in world energy scenario. Energy harvesting through wind and PV would be focused in this course.

This course will encapsulate PV systems in detail from design of a solar cell to standalone and grid tied PV systems.  Costing of renewable and hybrid systems will also be focused in this course.   

The course also includes a research project in which students would be required to do a detailed literature survey and or analysis of a known finding.

Profiling of PV cells, modeling of systems and presentation of a potential PV application or detailed review of some applications   is also acceptable. Original research is encouraged however a simulation based known result would also be acceptable.

Fundamentals of semiconductors

  • Semiconductors as materials for solar cells
  • Carrier concentration and distribution
  • generation-recombination processes

  • PN diodes: introduction to solar cells

 

Day 4

Design of solar cells

  • Upper limits of cell parameters
  • Losses in solar cells
  • Design of parameters for a high efficiency solar cell

 

Day 5

UHeterojunction, thin films and other promising solar cells

  • GaAs-based tandem cells
  • Amorphous Si based thin films
  • CIGS and CdTe based cells
  • Emerging cells
