Overview

Introduction:

Flooring systems are essential components of building infrastructure, particularly in healthcare facilities, where material performance, installation quality, and surface integrity directly influence operational efficiency, safety, hygiene, and service continuity. Effective flooring maintenance and defect remediation require specialized knowledge of finishing materials, deterioration mechanisms, inspection and diagnostic methods, and repair techniques suited to different operating conditions. This training program examines major flooring types, including ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles, marble, granite, terrazzo, medical-grade vinyl, and epoxy, alongside methods for evaluating flooring conditions and addressing cracks, hollow or debonded tiles, surface peeling, joint deterioration, and moisture related defects. It also covers repair material selection, adhesion testing, surface leveling, slip resistance, hygiene requirements, and chemical resistance, with particular emphasis on flooring systems used in hospitals and healthcare facilities.

Program Objectives:

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Examine the technical characteristics of different flooring systems and their installation, usage, and maintenance requirements.

  • Explore flooring deterioration mechanisms and inspection methods for cracks, debonding, surface peeling, and moisture-related defects.

  • Identify suitable localized and partial repair techniques that minimize the need for complete flooring removal.

  • Assess material adhesion testing, surface leveling requirements, and criteria for selecting appropriate repair materials.

  • Evaluate flooring safety, hygiene, slip resistance, and chemical resistance requirements in healthcare facilities.

Targeted Audience:

  • Civil and Architectural Maintenance Engineers.

  • Building and Facility Maintenance Supervisors and Technicians.

  • Hospital Facilities Management and Technical Services Professionals.

  • Quality Control, Technical Inspection, and Finishing Works Engineers.

  • Building Renovation, Rehabilitation, and Project Management Professionals.

Program Outline:

Unit 1:

Flooring Types, Technical Properties, and Application Requirements:

  • Classification of flooring systems, finishing material properties, and application characteristics.

  • Ceramic and porcelain flooring, including water absorption, durability, and abrasion resistance.

  • Marble and granite flooring, including surface protection, maintenance, and treatment requirements.

  • Terrazzo flooring composition, finishing characteristics, and rehabilitation requirements.

  • Flooring selection criteria based on operational loads, intended use, and environmental conditions.

Unit 2:

Medical-Grade Vinyl and Epoxy Flooring in Healthcare Facilities:

  • Medical-grade vinyl flooring characteristics and hospital application requirements.

  • Epoxy flooring systems, adhesion properties, and chemical resistance characteristics.

  • Resilient and resin based flooring layers and substrate preparation requirements.

  • Flooring joints, welded seams, hygienic coving, and sealing requirements.

  • Hygiene standards, slip resistance, and resistance to disinfectants and cleaning chemicals.

Unit 3:

Flooring Inspection, Defect Diagnosis, and Deterioration Causes:

  • Visual and technical inspection methods for evaluating flooring conditions.

  • Identification of cracks, fractures, hollow tiles, and separation from underlying layers.

  • Causes of surface peeling, abrasion, and deterioration in vinyl and epoxy flooring.

  • Moisture intrusion, water leakage, salt deposits, and their effects on material adhesion.

  • Joint deterioration, surface settlement, unevenness, and defect severity classification.

Unit 4:

Flooring Treatment Techniques and Defect Repair Methods:

  • Localized and partial flooring repair methods without complete flooring removal.

  • Crack treatment, hollow tile remediation, and tile rebonding based on substrate conditions.

  • Joint repairs and treatment of peeling and surface deterioration in rigid and resilient flooring.

  • Moisture remediation and treatment of underlying causes of layer separation before repairs.

  • Restoration techniques for marble, granite, terrazzo, vinyl, and epoxy flooring.

Unit 5:

Quality Testing, Repair Material Selection, and Flooring Safety:

  • Material bond strength, adhesion testing, and verification of flooring layer integrity.

  • Surface leveling, flatness requirements, and substrate preparation before repairs.

  • Selection criteria for repair compounds, adhesives, joint fillers, and protective coatings.

  • Slip resistance, abrasion resistance, moisture resistance, and chemical resistance testing criteria.

  • Repair acceptance criteria, preventive maintenance, and hygiene and safety requirements in hospitals.
