Overview

Introduction:

Structural steel design in the oil and gas industry focuses on ensuring the integrity, durability, and safety of steel structures exposed to extreme operational and environmental conditions. Corrosion, material selection, and structural reliability play a crucial role in maintaining pipelines, platforms, and processing facilities. This training program equips participants with the essential knowledge of material properties, corrosion mechanisms, and protection strategies to enhance structural performance and longevity in oil and gas applications.

Program Objectives:

At the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Analyze material properties and corrosion engineering principles for structural steel in oil and gas applications.

  • Identify different types of corrosion and assess their impact on structural integrity.

  • Evaluate corrosion control methods, including cathodic protection and protective coatings.

  • Assess advanced corrosion monitoring techniques for oil, gas, and water facilities.

  • Develop strategies for improving the durability and safety of structural steel components.

Targeted Audience:

  • Structural and mechanical engineers.

  • Corrosion and materials engineers.

  • Oil and gas project managers.

  • Maintenance and inspection professionals.

  • Quality assurance and asset integrity specialists.

Program Outline:

Unit 1:

Construction Material Grades and Principles of Corrosion Engineering:

  • Metallurgy and engineering material properties.

  • Materials testing methods, including destructive testing.

  • Material identification techniques according to API 5L and ASME codes.

  • Economic impacts of corrosion.

  • Theory of corrosion and corrosion rate measurement.

Unit 2:

Types of Corrosion:

  • Galvanic corrosion.

  • Localized and pitting corrosion.

  • Corrosion exposed to stray currents.

  • Soil corrosion.

  • Crevice corrosion and microbiologically induced corrosion (MIC).

Unit 3:

Advanced Corrosion Mechanisms:

  • Wet hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) corrosion mechanisms.

  • Corrosion under insulation (CUI).

  • Corrosion under supports (CUS).

  • Flow-assisted corrosion (erosion corrosion).

  • Chloride stress corrosion cracking and intergranular corrosion.

Unit 4:

Corrosion Control in Oil, Gas, and Water Fields:

  • Structural protection process through design modifications.

  • Active cathodic protection process using sacrificial anodes.

  • Cathodic protection techniques with impressed current systems.

  • Passive protection methods using coatings and protective paints.

  • Corrosion control measures through chemical inhibitors.

Unit 5:

Corrosion Monitoring in Oil, Gas, and Water Fields:

  • Thickness measurement using ultrasonic testing.

  • Radiographic examination techniques.

  • CKey activities for corrosion monitoring with corrosion coupons.

  • Electrical probes for corrosion detection.

  • Intelligent pigs and risk-based inspection (RBI).
